From expert knowledge to an assessable learning journey

A course is not a cleaned-up set of slides. It is a designed sequence that helps a learner notice what matters, practise the right decisions and produce evidence that the intended change has occurred.

Subject experts usually begin with content: what is true, important and worth knowing. Learners, however, need a journey. They need to know where to start, how ideas connect, what to do with them, what good performance looks like and how to improve.

The transformation from knowledge to learning therefore requires a series of design decisions. These decisions should be visible to the expert so that accuracy and educational usefulness are reviewed together.

Define the performance gap

Begin with the difference between current and desired performance. “Understand the topic” is difficult to design and impossible to assess reliably. “Recognise the pattern, explain the mechanism and choose the safe next action” gives the team a usable target.

The target should include the learner, context, action, standard and evidence. It may also include what the learner must not do, especially where common errors or unsafe shortcuts are important.

Separate foundational knowledge from expert judgement

Foundational knowledge may be available in documents and references. Expert judgement often appears in variation, prioritisation, exceptions, trade-offs and the reasons one plausible option is stronger than another. That judgement is what makes specialist learning valuable.

Capture examples of difficult decisions, common misconceptions, borderline cases and feedback the expert repeatedly gives. These become the raw material for scenarios, distractors, oral prompts and applied activities.

Build the sequence around cognitive work

A useful sequence often moves from orientation to relationship, then application and independent performance. It should reduce unnecessary complexity while preserving the complexity the learner genuinely needs to manage.

  1. Orient: establish the purpose, context and major structure.
  2. Explain: make the key relationship or reasoning process visible.
  3. Model: show how an expert applies the idea.
  4. Practise: let the learner attempt a related task with support.
  5. Assess: require evidence with less support.
  6. Reflect and continue: explain the result and identify the next action.

Choose activities that reveal thinking

Passive content can communicate information, but it provides little evidence of what the learner can do. Interaction should be used to reveal a decision, relationship, sequence or explanation.

A hotspot can test orientation. A model can expose spatial relationships. A scenario can reveal prioritisation. A question can discriminate between plausible options. An oral response can reveal structure and communication. The activity is valuable because of the evidence it produces, not because it is interactive.

Design feedback at the same time as the task

Feedback should explain what the response shows, why the stronger approach is stronger and what the learner should do next. If the team cannot define useful feedback, the assessment criterion may still be unclear.

For AI-guided practice, criteria and evidence must be especially explicit. The model should not be asked to invent an educational standard during the session. It should apply an approved framework to the learner’s response and communicate bounded, formative feedback.

The test of a learning journey is not whether the content was presented. It is whether the learner had a structured opportunity to perform and improve.

Create a reviewable blueprint

Before full production, document each module with its outcome, source, key explanation, activity, feedback, media, accessibility alternative, assessment evidence and reviewer. This blueprint becomes the shared contract between subject, learning, design and technical teams.

It also enables efficient change. A reviewer can challenge one outcome or activity without reopening the entire product, and production can estimate effort against a defined scope.

Connect progress to meaningful evidence

Completion should not be the only signal. The platform can show recent learning, assessment attempts, practice themes, feedback and readiness indicators. The exact evidence depends on the purpose and must be interpreted carefully, but it should help the learner decide what to do next.

Expert knowledge, guidelines, products and learner needs change. The blueprint, source references, review history and reusable activities make updates safer.
